Harwell Calls for Seven GOP Congressional Seats
Doug Harwell says Alabama lawmakers should redraw congressional maps to create seven Republican-held U.S. House districts
Republican Alabama Senate candidate Doug Harwell is calling on State lawmakers to redraw Alabama’s congressional districts into seven secure Republican seats following the recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling in Louisiana v. Callais.
Harwell, who is running for Alabama Senate District 34 in Mobile County, said Thursday that Republicans should move quickly to protect GOP control in Congress and eliminate Alabama’s two Democrat-held congressional districts.
“Alabama is a bright red, MAGA, Trump State, and our congressional maps should reflect that indisputable fact following the U.S. Supreme Court ruling in our favor,” Harwell said. “The margins in the U.S. House are razor thin, and our solidly Republican State should not allow Democrats to control even one of our congressional seats.”
Harwell argued that several Democrat-controlled States have already drawn congressional maps that leave Republicans without representation in their delegations, despite sizable GOP voting blocs.
He pointed specifically to States including Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Vermont, Hawaii, and Delaware, all of which currently send only Democrats to Congress.
“Liberal States like California are taking action right now to redistrict their congressional maps and remove every Republican, and it is time for Alabama to go toe-to-toe with them,” Harwell said. “We can no longer afford to fight with one hand tied behind our backs, and the Louisiana v. Callais decision opens the door for us to run the table with Republican districts.”
The comments come as Alabama Republicans continue debating the future of the State’s congressional maps after years of legal fights tied to the Voting Rights Act and minority representation.

Alabama currently sends five Republicans and two Democrats to the U.S. House. The State’s redrawn congressional map, approved after federal court intervention in 2023, led to the election of Democrat Shomari Figures in Alabama’s newly configured 2nd Congressional District.
Harwell said Republican lawmakers should already be working on another redraw, highlighting the fact that time is precious. He suggested Republicans in the Alabama Legislature should have already begun efforts to create a new, solidly Republican congressional map.
Harwell framed the issue as part of a larger national political fight over control of Congress and the direction of the country under President Donald Trump.
“By redrawing two of our districts from blue to red, Alabama could be the deciding factor in whether President Trump and Speaker Johnson continue to control Congress or whether Hakeem Jeffries and his liberal Democrat cronies take over and reverse the commonsense conservative politics we have fought to put in place following the Biden/Harris disaster,” Harwell said.
“In this fight for the heart and soul of our nation, Alabama cannot afford to be led by what Thomas Paine called ‘summertime soldiers and sunshine patriots,’ and I, for one, am willing to step up and demand an all Republican congressional map.”
Harwell is a Mobile County businessman and former member of the Mobile County School Board. He is currently seeking the Republican nomination for Alabama Senate District 34, an open seat being vacated by Jack Williams, who is running for Commissioner of Agriculture and Industries.
