How Hard is it to Vote Conservatively?

Guest Opinion by Terri LaPoint, Candidate for Congress in Alabama’s 3rd District

Alabama taxpayers are fed up with so much of our hard-earned money being wasted by Congress.  We celebrated when DOGE dug into where politicians, bureaucracies, and agencies were spending money, because it exposed what most of us have long suspected. Washington DC spends entirely too much of OUR money on fraud, waste, and downright idiotic things. We send billions of US dollars overseas to fund things that very few in their right mind would see as the responsibility of the American taxpayers.

Congress does not have a track record of being good stewards of taxpayer money. On Wednesday, Congress members had the opportunity to redeem themselves somewhat in this regard. Republicans in particular had the chance to live up to the party platform of smaller government and fiscal conservatism. There were two beautiful opportunities presented to the House of Representatives in the form of amendments to cut funding.

Beautiful Amendments

Texas Rep. Chip Roy’s amendment would have helped reign in the out-of-control liberal Washington DC circuit court system by reducing its funding by 20% and cutting unnecessary staff funding for two rogue DC judges with a repeated track record of overstepping their authority and abusing their power.

The other amendment, sponsored by Rep. Eli Crane (AZ) and backed by Elon Musk, would have cut $315 billion in funding for the National Endowment for Democracy – an organization that has long since abandoned its stated purpose of promoting democracy and instead finances liberal, far-left agendas in many nations around the world. NED is a far cry from anything resembling “America First.”

These were amendments that many Alabamians want. These were amendments that line up with things President Donald Trump is working to make happen for the American people, and they clearly align with the Republican Party platform.

How Hard is it to Vote Conservatively?

Many conservative Republicans in Congress stood up for what is right and voted for these amendments. However, they were disgusted and disappointed when some Republicans joined the ranks of the Democrats to defeat these good amendments.

Rep. Mike Rogers – AL District 3 – is the only Alabama Republican Congressman to vote against both amendments and keep funding NED and the DC court excesses. All the rest of the Alabama Republicans voted in support of Rep. Chip Roy’s amendment, but Rogers joined the Democrats and 45 other House RINOs to defeat the measure. Only Reps. Barry Moore and Gary Palmer stood firm for Alabamians to vote against the $315 billion for NED.

My inbox is full today of people who are livid. Alabama voted for President Trump to slow down the runaway freight train of unnecessary spending by Washington. As one of the most conservative states in the nation, Alabama should be able to expect its delegation to stand and fight for conservative fiscal policy and values. This should not be a hard thing! Many of the people contacting me feel like they have been gut-punched, again, by Congressman Mike Rogers’ votes this week.

District 3 deserves to have a true conservative who knows how to stand firm for what is right. This May, District 3 voters have the opportunity to elect a true conservative with the fortitude to stand against the political pressure and do the right thing for Alabama and for America. Vote for me – Terri LaPoint, for US Congressional Seat 3. I will stand strong for what is right. I always have.
