An independent survey of likely Republican primary voters shows State Auditor Andrew Sorrell with an early edge in the race for Alabama Secretary of State.

The Alabama Poll, conducted August 24–26 by political strategist Michael Lowry, found Sorrell leading his GOP opponent 20% to 16%, with 64% still undecided. The poll of 600 likely Republican primary voters carries a margin of error of ±4%. It used live phone calls and interactive text messages to reach voters across the state.

“The results of the Alabama Poll offer solid evidence that our strong grassroots movement is growing and momentum is clearly on our side,” Sorrell said in a statement. “Early surveys showed us a few points down, but face-to-face campaigning, a network of committed and eager supporters, and our strong message of zero tolerance for election rigging, ballot harvesting, and other forms of cheating is moving the scoreboard in our direction.”

Poll demographics show that 81% of respondents identify as very or somewhat conservative. 75% describe themselves as Born-Again Christians. Women made up 52% of the sample; men, 48%.

Sorrell was elected State Auditor in 2022, and previously served one term in the Alabama House representing District 3 in Colbert County. He was named a “Conservative Policy Warrior” by the Alabama Policy Institute in 2020 and received a perfect 100 rating on the American Conservative Union’s 2021 legislative scorecard.

A lifelong entrepreneur, Sorrell started his first company at age 16 and now owns four Alabama businesses employing about 20 people. The son, grandson, and great-grandson of preachers, he met his wife, Hannah, during a church history tour in Rome in 2016. They have two daughters, Liberty and Glory, and a newborn son, Justus.

Lowry, who led the polling, is an Alabama native and veteran political operative who has served as Chief of Staff to U.S. Rep. Robert Aderholt and worked with former House Majority Leader Eric Cantor.

The Alabama Republican primary for Secretary of State is scheduled for May 19, 2026.
