“Existing businesses are thriving, legacy sectors are growing, and still, our economic landscape is transforming” — Governor Kay Ivey

Governor Kay Ivey delivered her ninth and final State of the State address Tuesday night, charting the State’s economic progress, outlining priority policies for 2026 and spotlighting Alabamians whose work reflects the heart of the State’s success.

Standing before members of the Legislature, the Supreme Court, her Cabinet and invited guests in the Old House Chamber of the State Capitol, Ivey framed Alabama’s future as grounded in workforce growth, infrastructure investment and education improvements.

Economic growth and job creation were front and center in Ivey’s remarks. She noted that investments totaling $69 billion have helped create 100,000 jobs since 2017. “Existing businesses are thriving, legacy sectors are growing, and still, our economic landscape is transforming with new partners like Lilly Medicine,” she told lawmakers.

The Governor also pointed to major projects such as the planned $6 billion Eli Lilly Medicine facility in Huntsville and the relocation of U.S. Space Command’s headquarters to the State as markers of Alabama’s rising profile.

Building for tomorrow was another theme. Ivey highlighted the results of the Rebuild Alabama Act, which has directed more than $2 billion toward 500 road and bridge projects across all 67 counties, and expanded broadband access to communities Statewide.

In education, the Governor cited improvements in student achievement and workforce readiness. She also proposed a 2 percent pay increase for teachers and State employees as part of the 2027 budget plan.

Special guests highlight community strength. Before and during the address, Ivey recognized individuals and groups representing service and achievement across Alabama. Among them was Rodney Smith, Jr., a Huntsville native and founder of Raising Men Lawn Care Service. Smith’s nonprofit began with a simple act of helping a neighbor and has grown into a nationwide effort providing free lawn care to veterans, first responders and others in need.

Students from Booker T. Washington K-8 School in Birmingham were also honored for progress at one of the State’s Turnaround schools, symbolizing gains in classrooms that once struggled academically.

Musical selections showcased by members of the Montgomery Academy Chamber Chorus set the tone for the evening and were acknowledged during the address.

“These special guests represent the very best of our State,” Ivey said, calling them examples of service, talent and perseverance from across Alabama’s 67 counties.
