Jay Mitchell, a candidate for Alabama Attorney General in the 2026 Republican primary, is sounding the alarm over a recent $150,000 donation to rival Katherine Robertson's campaign from Florida billionaire Hugh Culverhouse Jr.

Culverhouse, a noted pro-abortion activist, has a history of publicly criticizing Alabama. In 2019, he urged a boycott of Alabama and the University of Alabama following the State’s new abortion ban. He described Alabama as “the land of the backward” and its residents as “hicks.” The University later returned his $26.5 million gift and removed his name from its law school.

Mitchell also pointed out Culverhouse’s past giving as further evidence of his agenda, noting that in 2019 he contributed $250,000 to Planned Parenthood to help establish a clinic in Birmingham.

Mitchell charged that Robertson “didn't just take $150,000 from a radical pro-abortion activist—she took it from a man who openly mocked Alabama and attacked our pro-life law.” He added: “Taking his money is a betrayal of Alabama values.”

He also said Culverhouse’s donation is part of a larger plan to weaken the State’s conservative leadership.

Mitchell warned, “This is the same Hugh Culverhouse Jr. who paid for an abortion clinic in Birmingham and tried to use his money to bully Alabama into abandoning its pro-life principles. Now he's trying to buy influence in the Attorney General's office? That should raise flags for every pro-life voter in Alabama.”

Mitchell further stated that Robertson’s campaign recently received $1.1 million from First Principles Action, which he described as “a shadowy anti-MAGA out-of-state dark money group.” ALPolitics.com has confirmed this amount from the Alabama Secretary of State’s website (scree shots below).

Mitchell presented himself as the true defender of Alabama’s conservative values: “Robertson may sell out to radical left-wing billionaires, but I will not. The people of Alabama deserve an Attorney General who will defend Alabama’s laws and pro-life values without apology.”
