Former Alabama Supreme Court Justice Jay Mitchell has formally announced his candidacy for Alabama Attorney General. Mitchell, a Republican known for his conservative judicial philosophy, resigned from the bench in May to pursue the office.

"With President Trump in the White House, we have a unique opportunity to get conservative wins here in Alabama," Mitchell stated. "I'm running for Attorney General to stop the lawlessness, restore order, and dismantle Joe Biden's radical left wing policies."

During his tenure on the Alabama Supreme Court, Mitchell authored several notable opinions, including a 2024 ruling that classified frozen embryos as children under State law. This decision temporarily halted in vitro fertilization (IVF) services in the state and sparked national debate. In response, the Alabama Legislature passed a law to protect IVF providers from legal repercussions.

Mitchell's campaign platform emphasizes a tough-on-crime approach, strict enforcement of immigration laws, unwavering support for law enforcement, and opposition to progressive policies. He has pledged to "lock up violent offenders and make sure they stay locked up," and to "aggressively pursue mass deportations" of undocumented immigrants.

The race for Attorney General is expected to be competitive. Other declared Republican candidates include Blount County District Attorney Pamela Casey and Katherine Robertson, Chief Counsel to outgoing Attorney General Steve Marshall. The Republican primary is scheduled for May 19, 2026.
