Jay Mitchell Tops Alabama AG Fundraising as Race Heats Up
With strong in-state donations, former Justice Jay Mitchell leads the Alabama GOP Attorney General field
Former Alabama Supreme Court Justice Jay Mitchell holds a commanding lead in fundraising as the Republican race for Attorney General heads toward the May 19 primary. According to recent campaign finance reports, Mitchell entered February with about $2.46 million in cash on hand and raised more than $264,000 in January alone. His team says all of this month’s support came from Alabama donors, underscoring a grassroots fundraising base.
The Mitchell campaign highlighted that every contributor is registered with the Alabama Secretary of State and that all funds were reported under state law. “Any Alabamian can look on the Secretary of State’s website and see exactly who is supporting my campaign,” Mitchell said in a campaign statement, emphasizing transparency. “I don’t have any donors to hide, and I don’t need to route dirty money through a complex web of dark money shell groups.”
Mitchell’s fundraising edge stands in sharp contrast to that of his GOP rival Katherine Robertson, whose campaign reported more than $300,000 this month tied to out-of-state groups. That single block accounts for a large share of her monthly haul, and roughly 60 percent of her total fundraising has come from outside Alabama, according to state filings. Her campaign has also accepted more than $1.6 million in what opponents describe as dark money this cycle.
Mitchell did not hold back in his criticism, saying, “Ms. Robertson owes it to the people of Alabama to tell the truth about the out-of-state interests bankrolling her campaign.”
Mitchell’s team says the campaign’s local financial strength reflects deep ties with Alabama conservatives. In a statement, the campaign added, “My campaign is powered by rank-and-file Alabama conservatives, not outside interests. They trust me to champion our values, strengthen our communities, and always put the people of this State first.”
Katherine Robertson reported $1,785,672 cash on hand as of January 31. The third candidate in the Republican AG race, Pamela Casey, reported just under $130,000 raised with $600,431 cash on hand.
Polling done by the Remington Research Group January 16-19 of this year, with a 3.5% margin of error, showed a statistical dead heat in the race:
- Jay Mitchell — 9%
- Katherine Robertson — 8%
- Pamela Casey — 8%
Notably, 75% of respondents in this poll were undecided, meaning it is anyone’s race at this point.
The Republican primary is scheduled for May 19.
