Jim Zeigler Qualifies for PSC Place 2 Race
Former State Auditor Zeigler filed Friday to run for Alabama Public Service Commission, Place 2, promising to be a “Watchman for the people”
Former Alabama State Auditor Jim Zeigler has qualified as a Republican candidate for the Alabama Public Service Commission, Place 2, setting up a contested primary this spring.
Zeigler, who served two terms as State Auditor from 2015 to 2023 and previously on the Public Service Commission in the 1970s, filed with the Alabama Republican Party as qualifying closed.
The Public Service Commission (PSC) regulates the state’s utilities, including electricity, natural gas and telecommunications, among other things.
Zeigler will face incumbent Chris Beeker III, who was appointed to the seat by Gov. Kay Ivey in 2024 after his father, longtime commissioner Chris Beeker Jr., stepped down. Other qualified Republican candidates include Priscilla Andrews, Jeffrey M. Boyd and Brent Woodall.
In a statement, Zeigler said his campaign is about restoring accountability and public voice to the commission. “I am running to put the public back into the public service commission. I will be the Watchman for the people,” he said. “The PSC is important, but they do not do a good job of letting the people know the issues they address.”
Zeigler’s earlier public service includes his term on the PSC from 1974 to 1978, followed by his tenure as Auditor. During his Wuditor years he frequently highlighted ethics issues and government oversight.
His wife, Jackie Zeigler, serves on the Alabama State Board of Education representing eight counties in South Alabama.
The Republican primary for PSC Place 2 is scheduled for May 19, 2026.
