Joan Reynolds Talks About The Mighty Alabama Strike Force
Alabama group works for Republican candidates at home and nationwide, needs volunteers and sponsors
For years. the Mighty Alabama Strike Force has been working to elect Republican candidates both in Alabama and other States. The group knocks on doors, staffs phone banks, shakes hands, distributes flyers to help Republicans win at the ballot box.
Most recently the group was in Virginia, working for the gubernatorial campaign of Winsome Sears. While Sears did not win, the group did help boost Republican strength in their area, such that Virginia Beach had significantly better performance than other urban areas in a deep purple (at best) to blue State.
ALPolitics.com spoke with Joan Reynolds, the founder and driving force behind the Mighty Alabama Stroke Force about the race, campaigning in severe weather, and what the future holds.
“The Mighty Alabama Strike Force had a week of working in Virginia Beach, Virginia,” Reynolds said. “We knocked on 2200 doors per day, even though we had a couple of days that we were working in the rain. And, it was not just a little rain! It rained pretty good, and the wind was blowing, but that was OK. We just kept working ‘cause we knew we had a short period of time to be there.”
“The Virginia volunteers were very, very helpful with everything that they did for us—lining up drivers and meals, and that sort of thing.
“We had been there four years ago and helped Glenn Youngkin. Of course, he was elected, even though it was very close, it was just barely a little over one percent. We thought that Winsome Sears would have at least that sort of a chance of winning, but it was not happening. Of course, it is a Democrat State.
“We were there a week and when we got back, of course we were disappointed, but we just understand that when you're in a State that's that Democratic, and that close to the DC beltway, that you've got an uphill battle.
“We were glad that we had the opportunity. We met some very nice people, but the results are already out there, and so we'll go with that. We'll look forward to going back to Georgia next year, and we'll probably go to one other State for senatorial races next year, so we'll be recruiting for that as well.
“I started this 17 years ago with two people and have worked with my volunteers and in increasing the numbers all these years. We have a good number of volunteers to choose from. Some have been with me every single solitary time that we've deployed, and some go when they can. My volunteers like to go out of State, they like to travel and a lot of them usually go with me every time. So, I do appreciate it.
“I do have to have sponsors and I have to have volunteers, and with those two mixes, I have a system now that I think we get things done,” Reynolds concluded.
Questions have been raised about the Virginia elections, including the last-minute appearance of more than 300,000 mail-in ballots, and the odd pattern of vote tracking in the Attorney General race. It should also be noted that the eastern part of the State is both highly populous and many residents work for, or in jobs associated with, the federal government. The area traditionally is strongly Democratic, and in this cycle that trend was exacerbated by DOGE, President Trump’s moves to streamline the federal workforce, and the government shutdown, not just in Virginia but in other States as well.
Given these factors, the strong performance in Virginia Beach—almost certainly due in no small part to the Mighty Alabama Strike Force—is nothing short of remarkable.
As Reynolds said, the Strike Force relies on volunteers and sponsors to continue their work. Those interested in volunteering can find a Volunteer Form at THIS LINK.
