Alabama Republican Party Chairman John Wahl is seeking a third term leading the state’s dominant political organization. Wahl, who has served as chairman since 2021, announced his re-election bid as party leaders prepare for the 2024 election cycle.

Under Wahl’s leadership, the Alabama GOP has maintained its stronghold in state politics, with Republicans holding every statewide office and a supermajority in the legislature. His tenure has been marked by efforts to energize the party’s grassroots base while navigating internal divisions and external challenges.

“The Alabama Republican Party is stronger than ever, but we still have work to do,” Wahl said in his announcement. “Our mission is to ensure conservative leadership at every level of government and to keep our state on the right track.”

While Wahl has received praise for his ability to raise funds and organize well-attended events, some members of the party’s executive committee have raised concerns about leadership and staff decisions. Issues such as event organization, fundraising transparency, and communication with party members have been points of contention in recent months. Despite these concerns, Wahl has continued to bring in strong financial support for the party and successfully hosted major Republican events across the state.

The election for party chairman will occur at the Alabama Republican Party’s winter meeting scheduled on March 1st, where state party leaders will decide whether to grant Wahl another term. With no major challengers publicly announced, he is expected to have a strong advantage heading into the vote.
