Jones to Beshear: “I Don’t Want People to Sleep on This Race”

Birmingham, AL – Democratic nominee for Governor Doug Jones joined Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear on The Andy Beshear Podcast, where they discussed how Alabama’s governor’s race is competitive and that growing enthusiasm is creating a path to victory in November.

“We are really running against history and expectations right now and people saying we can’t win. It’s a red state,” Jones said. “And the first thing I tell them is, well, I’ve already done it once.”

Jones pointed to increased Democratic primary participation and the response the campaign is receiving across the state.

“Democrats more than doubled the number of ballots that were cast from just four years ago. We outnumbered the Republican ballots in the five largest counties in Alabama,” Jones continued. “We’re meeting folks where they are one on one. We’re doing one to two town halls a week, and we’re drawing huge crowds.”

Beshear, a two-term Democratic governor in Kentucky, said the surge in participation reflects broader momentum across the South.

“I have never seen Democratic primary vote totals double in four years, and we’re seeing it all across the South,” Beshear said. “I can tell you from somebody who’s traveling, there is something special going on.”

Jones added, “I don’t want people to sleep on this race because it is one that we can win.”
