Governor Kay Ivey has appointed Judge Bill Lewis to the Alabama Supreme Court, filling the vacancy left by Justice Jay Mitchell's resignation. The announcement was made on Tuesday, May 20, 2025.

"Judge Bill Lewis continues demonstrating justice and fairness under the law, as well as a willingness to serve the people of Alabama," said Governor Ivey. "His decades of experience will serve the Supreme Court of Alabama well, and I am confident he is the best choice."

Judge Lewis brings a wealth of legal experience to the state's highest court. He was appointed to the Alabama Court of Civil Appeals in February 2024. Prior to that, he served as the presiding judge for the 19th Judicial Circuit, which includes Autauga, Elmore, and Chilton counties. His legal career also includes roles as an assistant district attorney, criminal defense attorney, and practitioner of civil and family law.

In addition to his judicial duties, Judge Lewis has been active in political circles. He served as Chairman of the Elmore County Republican Party and was a member of the State Executive Committee.

Justice Jay Mitchell, who had been serving on the Alabama Supreme Court since 2019, resigned to potentially pursue another office. In his resignation letter, Mitchell stated that “Serving on the Supreme Court has been the privilege of a lifetime, but my role as a judge limits what I can say and do for our state and country. President Trump is moving boldly to restore the United States Constitution — and we must ensure that his agenda takes root not only in Washington, but also in the states. I feel called to play a larger role in that effort in Alabama.”

Judge Lewis's appointment is effective immediately. Governor Ivey has indicated that a replacement for Lewis's seat on the Court of Civil Appeals will be announced soon.
