Justice Bill Lewis, Solicitor General Edmund “Eddie” LaCour Jr., Attorney Harold “Hal” Mooty all Nominated by Pres. Trump to Federal Bench
Alabama GOP Applauds Trump’s Three Alabama Judicial Picks

The Alabama Republican Party today offered its enthusiastic support for President Donald J. Trump’s recent nominations to the federal bench—naming Justice Bill Lewis, Solicitor General Edmund “Eddie” LaCour Jr., and litigator Harold “Hal” Mooty as its top picks.
President Trump’s announcement, made August 12, in part targets three judicial vacancies in Alabama’s federal courts.
Justice Bill Lewis, currently on the Alabama Supreme Court, brings deep experience from his time on the Court of Civil Appeals and as Presiding Judge in the 19th Judicial Circuit. A longstanding figure in Alabama Republican politics, he chairs the Elmore County GOP and serves on the party’s State Executive Committee.
Edmund “Eddie” LaCour Jr., the State’s Solicitor General, is known for his sharp legal mind and strong constitutional grounding. He has argued cases before the U.S. Supreme Court and is widely respected in legal circles for his composure and skill.
Hal Mooty, a partner at Bradley Arant Boult Cummings in Huntsville, is lauded for his courtroom savvy and leadership among Alabama attorneys.
ALGOP Chairman John Wahl celebrated the nominations:
“President Trump has once again demonstrated his commitment to placing highly qualified, principled conservatives on the federal bench. Justice Bill Lewis, Eddie LaCour, and Hal Mooty have each shown an unwavering dedication to the Constitution, the rule of law, and the principles that make our nation strong.”
“These are the kinds of judges who will interpret the law as written—not legislate from the bench—and who will protect the rights and freedoms of every Alabamian.
“I want to thank Senators Katie Britt and Tommy Tuberville for their leadership in recommending such outstanding individuals. This is a great day for Alabama, and I am confident these nominees will serve our state and our nation with honor,” Wahl concluded.
Attorney General Steve Marshall added his praise, especially for LaCour:
“President Trump could not have made a better choice than Edmund LaCour for the federal bench. Eddie is one of the most brilliant and principled lawyers with whom I have ever worked. His deep understanding of the law, his integrity, and his steady temperament are exactly what we need in a federal judge.”
“As Solicitor General, Eddie has led some of the most consequential legal battles in the country with exceptional skill and clarity. He has earned the respect of courts at every level—including the U.S. Supreme Court—and his legal acumen is second to none. Alabama and the nation will be well-served by his presence on the federal bench, and I urge the Senate to confirm him without delay.”
President Trump has now submitted five nominees across Alabama and Mississippi—including these three for Alabama—and their paperwork reached the Senate Judiciary Committee on August 6. With the Committee’s receipt of their dossiers, the path moves forward even though the Senate is currently in recess.
ALGOP urged the Senate to act swiftly to confirm the nominees, stressing their shared conservative values, legal rigor, and commitment to the rule of law.
