Montgomery, AL - A political showdown is brewing in Montgomery as Lt. Governor Will Ainsworth pushes back against Governor Kay Ivey’s attempt to centralize control over the Alabama Department of Veterans Affairs (ADVA). Ainsworth, a longtime advocate for military personnel, argues that Ivey’s proposal would strip veterans of their influence and replace it with political control.

The controversy began with Ivey’s unilateral firing of Veterans Affairs Commissioner Kent Davis, a move that ignored the State Board of Veterans Affairs, which had voted to retain him. Ivey claimed mismanagement of federal grants, but many saw her actions as a political overreach. Now, she wants to take further control by making the ADVA secretary a cabinet-level position, directly answerable to her office.

Ainsworth is having none of it. "When it comes to filling the needs of veterans, men and women who have actually worn a uniform should remain in charge," said Ainsworth. This highlights that Alabama’s veterans should continue to have a say in their own affairs through the board. He pointed to his leadership in passing a legislative package that strengthened support for military families, cut taxes for deployed troops, and expanded job opportunities for military dependents. “The bills we enacted will provide tax cuts for deployed troops, enhance the educational and occupational options for dependents of active armed forces personnel, and implement guidelines that make Alabama even more welcoming for those who serve,” Ainsworth said.

Ivey, however, is doubling down, defending her proposal in a press release. “The well-being of Alabama’s veterans should not be left to chance. A clear chain of command is crucial in ensuring our veterans receive the best services possible,” she stated.

However, Ainsworth’s position remains clear: veterans, not politicians, should guide the department’s future. His opposition to Ivey’s power grab signals his commitment to those who served, ensuring their voices aren’t drowned out by executive overreach.
