Manufacturing plays a central role in Alabama’s economic strength. The sector provides high-quality jobs and attracts investment, which anchors communities across our state. From automobiles and aerospace to steel and chemicals, manufacturing supports long-term growth across Alabama’s diverse industrial base.
The automotive industry stands as one of the most visible examples. Plants operated by Mercedes-Benz, Honda, Mazda Toyota, and Hyundai, along with a growing network of suppliers, have transformed Alabama into a national leader in auto production. Each plant supports thousands of direct jobs, while suppliers and logistics firms add thousands more indirect jobs. The ripple effect strengthens small businesses, housing markets, and local tax bases.
Aerospace, aviation, and defense manufacturing also hold a strategic place in Alabama’s economy. Facilities in Huntsville and Mobile produce rockets, aircraft, and naval vessels rely on a quality and skilled workforce. These operations support the warfighter and place Alabama at the forefront of national security as well as global innovation. The expertise gained in these industries fuels research partnerships with universities and positions our state as a hub for advanced technology.
Metals, chemicals, and forest products further illustrate the diversity of Alabama’s manufacturing base. Birmingham’s steel legacy continues with modern plants that operate efficiently and competitively in global markets. Chemical facilities along the Gulf Coast produce essential materials that support agriculture and food production, energy, and medical sectors. Meanwhile, Alabama’s vast amount of forestlands sustain a strong paper and wood products industry, which provides stable employment in rural areas.
Manufacturing also strengthens Alabama’s workforce. The sector offers wages above the state average and career opportunities for individuals without advanced degrees as well as for highly skilled engineers and technicians. Workforce training programs, supported by high schools, community colleges, and state initiatives, ensure that companies can hire workers who meet modern production standards.
In addition, manufacturing attracts domestic and international investment. Global companies view Alabama as a reliable location because of its pro-business climate and strategic location. These investments create long-term economic resilience by diversifying our state’s industries and reducing reliance on one single sector. Economic diversification ensures that Alabama can adapt to changes in global markets and continue to prosper through innovation and balance.
As Lieutenant Governor, I will continue to strengthen Alabama’s manufacturing foundation by promoting policies that support business expansion and retention, workforce development, and smart investments in infrastructure. I will work with industry leaders, educators, and government officials to ensure that our state remains competitive and ready for the future. It takes a team to build Alabama. By encouraging innovation and protecting the industries that built Alabama’s economy, we can create new opportunities for families across all of our 67 counties.
Ultimately, manufacturing drives prosperity in Alabama because it brings innovation, high-paying jobs, and international recognition. By supporting policies that encourage industry growth, Alabama secures its present strength as well as future stability.
