Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall, in an opinion piece on Fox News on Tuesday, warned that the rising political unrest seen in Minneapolis echoes violent threats he survived at home, and he urged leaders to defend the rule of law.

In the piece, Marshall recounted how an improvised explosive device was detonated outside the Alabama AG’s office in Montgomery in February 2024. The bomb was packed with nails and metal shrapnel — capable of causing grievous harm, he said — and was aimed at his office over his conservative views and Christian faith. Fortunately, no one was injured and the suspect was arrested.

“Had the device been placed just a few feet closer … we would have been planning funerals instead of counting blessings,” Marshall wrote.

Marshall said the attack was not an isolated act. He argued that a culture tolerating political violence as “legitimate political speech” has taken hold in other cities, particularly Minneapolis. He pointed to a recent incident in that city where a large group forced its way into a church during worship, calling it intimidation rather than protest.

The Attorney General criticized local officials and media for downplaying such events as peaceful protests. He argued that federal law — specifically the FACE Act, which prohibits using force to interfere with religious exercise — should apply to those actions.

Marshall also referenced the unrest that followed George Floyd’s death in 2020, saying the demonstrations there became excuses for riots, intimidation and property damage. He framed those events as an early sign of a dangerous trend in American public life.

“There’s no good response to extremist intimidation but unshakeable resolve,” Marshall wrote, calling for the full prosecution of politically motivated violence and protection for law-abiding citizens.

As Attorney General, Marshall is Alabama’s chief law enforcement officer. He is currently term-limited, and is a candidate in the Republican primary for the U.S. Senate.
