Mitchell Unveils Plan Targeting Extremism in Alabama
AG candidate Jay Mitchell outlines “Protect Alabama Plan,” focusing on terrorism, foreign funding, and security for faith groups and schools
Alabama Attorney General candidate Jay Mitchell has released a policy outline he calls the “Protect Alabama Plan,” aimed at addressing concerns about terrorism, foreign influence, and public safety across the State.
Mitchell, a former Justice on the Alabama Supreme Court, said the plan is designed to confront a growing threat of radical Islamic extremism while strengthening oversight of funding sources tied to foreign actors.
The proposal includes several measures. Among them: enforcing Alabama’s existing ban on Sharia law, increasing scrutiny of financial networks tied to foreign adversaries, and requiring greater transparency for schools, nonprofits, and political campaigns. The plan also calls for stronger penalties related to fraud, concealment, and providing material support to terrorist organizations.
Mitchell further proposed designating certain groups as domestic terror organizations, expanding protections for churches, synagogues, and schools, and improving intelligence sharing among law enforcement agencies across jurisdictions.

In announcing the plan, Mitchell pointed to developments in other U.S. cities as a warning.
“We’ve seen what happens when the spread of radical Islamic extremism goes unchallenged in places like Dearborn, Minneapolis, and New York City,” Mitchell said. “To keep Alabama from becoming another cautionary tale, we must proactively identify terrorist networks, aggressively enforce State law, and reject anti-American agendas without apology. Rest assured: radical Islamic extremism will not take root in Alabama if I am the Attorney General.”
The campaign did not release additional details on how specific designations or enforcement actions would be carried out under State law. More information is expected as the race for Attorney General develops, leading up to the May 19 primary.
