Mobile County District Attorney Keith Blackwood has endorsed Jay Mitchell in the race for Alabama Attorney General, adding another prosecutor’s voice to the growing list of law-enforcement leaders supporting the candidate.

Blackwood announced his endorsement this week, praising Mitchell’s experience and his commitment to working alongside local prosecutors across the state.

“As Mobile County District Attorney, my duty is to hold criminals accountable and protect the people of Mobile County,” Blackwood said. “To effectively fulfill that role, Alabama needs an Attorney General who truly understands the realities of our justice system and will stand firmly with local prosecutors when we enforce the law. Jay Mitchell is that proven leader — he has the experience and commitment to support us in this work. I am proud to endorse him for Attorney General.”

Blackwood has led the Mobile County District Attorney’s Office since 2022, when he was elected to serve as District Attorney for Alabama’s 13th Judicial Circuit. A longtime prosecutor, he has spent more than 15 years with the office and previously served as Chief Assistant District Attorney.

He is a graduate of Auburn University and Cumberland School of Law at Samford University. During his career, Blackwood has prosecuted thousands of cases, including complex and capital cases that brought national attention to the office.

As District Attorney, Blackwood oversees a team of more than 90 prosecutors, investigators, victim advocates, and support staff working to prosecute criminal cases and strengthen public safety across Mobile County, Alabama.

Mitchell welcomed the endorsement and praised Blackwood’s record as a prosecutor.

“Keith Blackwood is one of the finest prosecutors in Alabama, and Mobile County is fortunate to have him in the fight. I’m honored by his support — and as Attorney General, I look forward to partnering with him to reduce violent crime and improve outcomes for victims Statewide.”

Mitchell previously served on the Alabama Supreme Court from 2019 until his resignation in 2025. He entered the race for Attorney General shortly afterward, positioning his campaign around public safety, support for law enforcement, and conservative legal priorities.

Blackwood’s endorsement adds to a coalition of sheriffs, police chiefs, investigators, and prosecutors backing his bid to become Alabama’s next Attorney General.
