Myrex Wins AL HD-12 Special General Election
Will formally assume the seat when the results are certified
Voters in parts of Cullman County cast ballots today in the Special General Election for Alabama House District 12. With every precinct reporting, Republican Cindy Myrex appears to have won decisively and will become the next State Representative for the district.
Unofficial results released Tuesday evening by the Alabama Republican Party showed:
- Cindy Myrex (R): 1,944 votes — 87.06%
- Matt Glover (D): 287 votes — 12.85%
- Write-ins: 2 votes — 0.09%
Jeannie Burniston, Alabama Republican Party Director of Legislative Affairs & Communications, issued a statement congratulating the winner:
“On behalf of the Alabama Republican Party, I want to extend our congratulations to Representative-elect Cindy Myrex on a well-run race. Cindy’s commitment to her community and conservative values will serve the people of House District 12 well. We look forward to working with her when the legislature returns to session next year.”
The seat came open earlier this year when State Representative Corey Harbison resigned to devote time to his family. Harbison, a Republican first elected in 2014, had grown increasingly absent from legislative sessions in 2024 and 2025, even while remaining on roll call.
Myrex first won the Republican nomination in August, defeating Clint Hollingsworth in a runoff. Glover, her Democratic opponent, had served on the Good Hope City Council in earlier years.
Myrex will formally assume the seat once certified and will join the legislature when it returns to session in January.
UPDATE: early Wednesday morning, Myrex graciously responded to ALPolitics.com’s request for a statement, saying:
“I am so humbled and so honored to have won this seat. Last night was an incredible night filled with many levels of emotions, knowing that I connected with more people in Cullman County than I thought, and surrounded by the people that helped get me there and the ones that will work with me in the years to come!
“I am honored to be the first woman legislator elected from Cullman County, and I’m ready to get to work for District 12.”
