Birmingham, AL – Today, Doug for Alabama launched "Diesel," a new 30-second ad that uses Tommy Tuberville's own words to highlight his positions on rising fuel costs and data centers, as well as his financial ties to the data center industry.
"Diesel and gas prices are sky-high, but Tommy Tuberville thinks we're happy to pay them," the ad begins.
The ad then features Tuberville being asked whether Alabamians are willing to pay higher gas prices. His answer: "Yeah, sure they are."
Alabama's average gas price is above $4 a gallon, and diesel in the state hit a record high above $6 this month. Last year’s average, according to AAA, was $2.76 for gas and $3.43 for diesel. Earlier this year, Doug Jones called on Governor Ivey and the legislature to pause the gas tax like neighboring state Georgia.
On data centers, Tuberville says: "We'll take all the data centers we can get."
"Life is different for Tommy. The government pays for his gas, and he takes campaign money from the data center developers," the ad continues. "Tommy will be fine. We'll get stuck with the bill."
In August, Applied Digital Corporation, the developer behind the AI data center project in Brookwood, contributed $25,000 to Tuberville's campaign. Tuberville also has reported significant trading activity in AI and data center companies, including Chinese tech company Alibaba, a major global data center developer.
Jones has made protecting Alabamians from the potential costs of massive data centers a centerpiece of his campaign, calling for a one-year moratorium on new AI data center approvals while the state puts guardrails in place. His plan would require greater transparency, give communities a voice in where projects are built, and protect ratepayers from bearing the costs of increased power demand.
