A wave of “No Kings” demonstrations are scheduled across Alabama this Saturday, March 28. Organizers describe the rallies as a response to perceived overreach in government, while critics question whether the effort is as organic as advertised.

According to reporting from the Montgomery Advertiser, events are scheduled in multiple communities, including Birmingham, Huntsville, Montgomery, Mobile, and Tuscaloosa. Smaller gatherings are also expected in suburban and rural areas, pointing to a broad geographic reach.

The demonstrations are part of a wider national push, tied to concerns over executive authority and what organizers frame as threats to democratic norms. Participants are expected to gather at public spaces such as parks and courthouses, with messaging centered on limiting concentrated political power.

Organizers have promoted the rallies under the banner “No Kings,” a phrase meant to signal opposition to any form of unchecked authority. In public materials, demonstrators have called for accountability and adherence to constitutional limits.

At the same time, questions remain about who is driving the effort. Many observers point to similarities in messaging, branding, and timing across States, raising the possibility that the demonstrations may be less spontaneous than they appear, describing them as either a “spontaneous outcry or well-funded theater.” A previous examination of the funding of the national No King’s organization reveals a number of well-known progressive groups: Human Rights Campaign, MoveOn, Public Citizen, the American Federation of Teachers, the ACLU, Planned Parenthood, Greenpeace, and others. Another source has provided a list of No Kings Partners and their funding sources:

Arabella: $79M
Warren Buffet: $16M
Ford: $51M
Rockefeller: $26M
Soros: $72M
Tides: $45M

For a total of $294,487,641 million.

That divide — grassroots activism versus coordinated campaign — has become a central point of contention surrounding the events.

Law enforcement agencies across the State have indicated they are aware of the planned gatherings and are preparing to monitor them. No major disruptions have been announced, though officials are urging participants to remain peaceful and follow local ordinances.

While turnout remains an open question, the breadth of planned locations suggests organizers are aiming to show visible, Statewide momentum. Whether that translates into lasting political impact may depend less on crowd size and more on what comes next.
