Ocean Spray Canned Water?
Company Investigates After Thanksgiving Cranberry Sauce Cans Appear to Contain Only Water
Some holiday tables may have had an unexpected surprise over Thanksgiving weekend. Viral social media videos showed several cans labeled as Ocean Spray cranberry sauce that appeared to contain only clear liquid, not the jellied cranberry sauce shoppers expect.
In one widely shared video on TikTok, the caption read, “My best friend opened up cans of water instead of cranberry sauce,” as several cans showed what looked like plain water inside. That post generated more than 550,000 reactions and was shared tens of thousands of times.
Another social video on Facebook showed unpacking a can—“can number four!”—with similar results. “The cans were filled with water,” the user wrote alongside footage of the can’s interior. That post earned more than 119,000 views.
Ocean Spray has acknowledged the reports and says it is working to understand what happened. In a statement shared with reporters, the company said it is aware of consumer reports that some cans may have contained water rather than cranberry sauce. It also said it is “looking into it” as the investigation continues.
At this time, Ocean Spray has not publicly released details on how widespread the issue might be or what caused the apparent mix-ups.
