On Friday, November 7 2025, local Veterans were honored at the Pelham Civic Complex during a pinning ceremony hosted by Gary Palmer, U.S. Representative for Alabama’s 6th District, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War.

The event opened with remarks from Pelham Mayor Rick Wash, who spoke of the city’s pride in honoring those who served. “This is a huge honor, and the city of Pelham is extremely honored to participate in this event,” he said. “Most importantly, I would like to thank all of the veterans and their families here today. You truly know what true sacrifice is all about. You men and women know that freedom isn’t free—it comes with a price. I encourage you today to please help spread that word to young people, who so easily forget what made this country great and what keeps it great.”

Representative Palmer followed with remarks recognizing the decades of service and sacrifice by Vietnam-era Beterans. He quoted Romans 13:7 (NKJV): “Render therefore to all their due… honor to whom honor.” In a statement, Palmer added:

“For Veterans of the Vietnam War, the honor we owe them is long overdue. Those who served in Vietnam answered their country’s call in a difficult and divisive time. When they returned home, they often received little to no recognition for their sacrifice. It was a privilege to recognize these veterans for their dedication and service to our nation. Especially around Veterans Day, it’s never too late to thank our veterans.”

He also acknowledged his staff and the City of Pelham for partnering to host the event and ensure Veterans received the recognition they deserve.

During the ceremony, each Veteran in attendance was personally pinned by Rep. Palmer, and he extended his thanks for their service. The event marked part of a nationwide commemoration of Vietnam-era veterans, covering service and sacrifice from 1955 to 1975.
