Community advocate Portia Shepherd has officially declared her candidacy for Mayor in the upcoming August 26 City election .

Running under the campaign banner “Fully Loaded for Change,” Shepherd vows to bring a people-first approach to City Hall. “It’s time to restore what’s been lost and finally move the city forward—together,” she said during her announcement.

Shepherd’s reputation precedes her: for years, she has tackled environmental, youth and public health challenges across Alabama’s Black Belt with hands-on leadership. She’s won praise for her willingness to roll up her sleeves and deliver measurable results.

Key Priorities for Shepherd include:

  • Open and Honest Government
Uniontown hasn’t commissioned a full financial audit since 2010. Shepherd plans to order a thorough audit on “Day One” and publish all findings. “You can’t fix what you won’t face,” she insisted.
  • Reliable Emergency Services
With around-the-clock ambulance coverage currently absent, she wants to restore 24‑hour emergency response and bolster local fire and police services in cooperation with the county hospital board. “Help should never be 20 minutes away,” Shepherd emphasized.
  • Youth & Recreation Investment
Shepherd is pushing to fully staff and fund the Parks & Recreation Department so Uniontown’s parks are clean, safe and welcoming. “Our parks should be a source of joy, not frustration,” she asserted.
  • Infrastructure & Neighborhood Revitalization
Repairing roads, cleaning up neighborhoods and preserving local character are central to her vision. “We can’t grow without taking care of what we already have,” she noted.

Shepherd is adamant that her Mayoral bid is a grassroots effort—not business as usual. Her track record of advocacy across the region is seen as a strong foundation for her Mayoral goals by her supporters.

“I’ve already been doing the work. This campaign just puts a title to it. The time for change isn’t next year—it’s now,” she said.

Shepherd will be facing incumbent Ron Miller and challengers Geneva “Nee” Jones, Calvin Jordan and Don Moore. The election is set for Tuesday, August 26, 2025.

The last day to register to vote in the August 26 election is August 12. Information on how to register is available HERE.
