On Tuesday February 24, 2026, the President of the Log Cabin Republicans of Huntsville Alabama (LCR HSV), Andy Blalock, spoke strongly about the Republican Party of Alabama lacking conservatives to make hard decisions for Alabama. “How do we think we can maintain a conservative red state in Alabama if we cannot even pass HB23 to expand the ban on gender ideology in education from grades K-5 to Pre-K through 12th grade?” Blalock asked. ”We are losing conservatives one family at a time as a result of the indoctrination of children in public education,” he added.
Blalock is the founder and President of Log Cabin Republicans Huntsville Alabama, a LGBT Conservative Republican group. This group is part of the National organization that began in 1977 and was pivotal in helping elect President Trump in 2024.
The bill which LCR HSV is encouraging the Alabama legislature to push through the education committee and vote to send to Governor Ivey for signature is sponsored by Republican Representative Mack Butler and co-sponsored by Republican Representatives Ben Harrison and Mark Gidley.
Alabama’s House Bill 23 (HB23) is an education measure that builds on existing state law by expanding current classroom instruction limits related to gender identity and sexual orientation from just Kindergarten through 5th grade to all public-school grade levels, Pre-K through 12th grade. In addition to broadening that restriction, the bill would also prohibit public school employees from displaying flags or insignia related to gender identity or sexual orientation on school property and prevent teachers or staff from using pronouns for students that are inconsistent with their biological sex at birth, effectively extending and strengthening the scope of the previous law beyond early elementary grades to the entire K-12 system.
“I have reached out and spoken to Representative Butler, Senator Kitchens, and even Representative and Education Chair Terri Collins. I have shared my sentiments and concerns yet here we are in week 7 of the legislature and the bill hasn’t even made it out of committee” Blalock said. Blalock also stated he had emailed Speaker of the House Nethaniel Ledbetter who serves District 24 in Northeast Alabama and has received no response. The bill made it to committee in 2025 but was held up and did not make it to the House and Senate for a vote.
Blalock was asked how an organization such as LCR HSV supports this bill and his reply was very enlightening.
“The Alabama and National Chapters of Log Cabin Republicans believe we have all the rights we deserve under the Constitution. We are not looking for any special rights. In fact, we are the resistance to the Democrat’s play book to use identity politics for political votes. We love conservative government. The more limited, the better! Our Alabama Chapter believes the Democrats will continue to build upon their voter base by indoctrinating children in public education and attempting to shut down ICE and legalize illegal immigrants so they can vote. It is important we see this and put a stop to the roots of the Democrat plan now, before the momentum is too great to overcome here in Alabama,” he said.
