Andrew Sorrell announced on Monday that he will be seeking a second term as Alabama State Auditor.

Sorrell has been campaigning for the position of Alabama Secretary of State, but had not yet formally qualified for that race. Qualifying for the May 19 Republican primary opened on Monday, so technically no one had qualified or any race—despite months of vigorous campaigning by Akabama hopefuls.

In a statement shared with ALpolitics.com and shared on Facebook, Sorrell said:

“I’ve determined that I can best serve my fellow Alabamians by giving them an experienced and committed state auditor with a proven track record of defending taxpayers and protecting the dollars they send to Montgomery. I’ll continue fighting for accountability in state government and promoting the values that earned me national recognition as the most conservative official in the Alabama State House.”

Sorrell’s withdrawal leaves Caroleene Dobson as the only declared Republican candidate in the Secretary of State race—but with qualifying only opening today and running through January 23, other candidates may well decide to enter that race.

Sorrell will now face Derek Chen and Josh Pendergrass—and any other candidates who throw their hat in now that qualifying has opened—in the May 19 Republican primary.

Andrew Sorrell is a former State Representative from House District 3 in Colbert County who was elected Alabama State Auditor in 2022.
