Governor Kay Ivey has officially set the dates for a special election to fill the Alabama House District 63 seat, which opened up after she appointed Representative Cynthia Lee Almond as president of the Alabama Public Service Commission. Almond was sworn in this morning.

The special primary election is scheduled for Tuesday, September 30, 2025. If a runoff is needed, it will be held on Tuesday, October 28, 2025. The special general election will take place on Tuesday, January 13, 2026.

Candidates from major political parties must qualify by Monday, June 23, 2025, at 5:00 p.m. Independent candidates and those representing minor parties have until Tuesday, September 30, 2025, at 5:00 p.m. to file.

House District 63 covers portions of Tuscaloosa County.

In a statement, Governor Ivey praised Almond’s service in the Legislature, saying, “Representative Cynthia Almond has served the people of House District 63 with integrity and purpose, and while her presence in the Legislature will be missed, I know her leadership will continue to shine as she steps into this vital statewide role. Although Representative Almond leaves big shoes to fill, I am confident that House District 63 will continue to showcase strong leadership and representation in Alabama. I encourage everyone in the district to make their vote count.”

Almond, who served in the Legislature since October 20, 2021, is a Tuscaloosa attorney and former member of the Tuscaloosa City Council. During her time in office, she focused on ethics reform, education funding, and government transparency. Governor Ivey announced her appointment to the Public Service Commission on June 6, 2025. Her House seat officially became vacant on June 15, the day before she took her new oath of office.

At least one candidate has already stepped up. Tuscaloosa City Council member Norman Crow has announced his run for the District 63 seat. Crow, a business owner, said the district “deserves an experienced rep who listens, leads, and delivers,” pointing to his record of fiscal responsibility and local leadership.
