Statement from Dr. Will Boyd Honoring Bloody Sunday
From the Boyd Campaign
From the Boyd campaign
On March 7, 1965, in Selma AL, John Lewis and Hosea Williams lead 600 protestors in a march for justice and equality. Their actions were peaceful, but they were repaid in blood and violence. The footage of this heartbreaking scene was aired nationally.
People all over the country responded with love and support. They staged sit ins and blockades in solidarity. They cried out as if to say, “this is not who we are!” On March 25, the march finally reached the capitol steps, but this time, the numbers had swelled to 25,000. It was a pivotal movement that changed the future of our country.
Yesterday, as I walked across the Edmund Pettus Bridge, I felt a deep sense of purpose. The amazing courage it took to complete that march cannot be understated. They did not wait until the present was ready for them. They acted to create a better future for their children and their grandchildren. They did this to build a better future for my family, and they did it for me.
Their sacrifice must be honored. We will continue the fight for equity and for a better future for all people. As Governor of Alabama, I pledge to use the office to bring a new beginning to Alabama. One that is rooted in human dignity and focused on delivering opportunity to the people of this great state.
