STATEMENT FROM DR. WILL BOYD REGARDING SEN. TOMMY TUBERVILLE’S SUPPORT FOR THE SAVE ACT

“Once again, Sen. Tuberville has taken a position that is an attack on the democracy that Alabamians and all Americans cherish. And this time, he’s done so for purely political reasons.
“This week, in a Facebook Reel posted by an Alabama media outlet, he said that ‘adjustments’ must be made ‘to our voting procedures before the next election. If not, we won’t win.’ The adjustments Tuberville was talking about is the SAVE Act currently being pushed through Congress. The problem is that this bill is the very definition of voter suppression, something that cuts to the very heart of Alabama’s history. To put it bluntly, the SAVE Act is a 21st century Jim Crow tactic – except it’s not only targeting Black voters, but people of all races who are seniors, low income, students or have a disability.
“It calls for photo IDs, something that many Americans can’t afford or don’t have easy access to get. In fact, more than 21 million Americans don’t have access to the documents (passport, birth certificates, etc.) that the act requires. It also would make registering to vote by mail more difficult by requiring voters to produce citizenship documents “in person” to an election official.
“The SAVE Act also attacks or eliminates voter registration drives and online voter registration systems, as well as automatic voter registration. It could make address changes more difficult, requiring voters to take their passports or birth certificates to an election agency office instead of updating it automatically or doing it online.
“But this is what Tuberville wants: to make voting more difficult for those with the least power, who are the most vulnerable. It’s a 21st century Jim Crow action that would take Alabama and the nation back more than 60 years. It would be the ultimate slap in the face to those who crossed the Edmund Pettus Bridge like the late Congressman John Lewis, an Alabama native, and brave Americans like Viola Liuzzo, who was killed because she left Detroit and came to Alabama to help Black Alabamians secure their voting rights. Only this time, it wouldn’t just be Black Alabamians who would be impacted. So would the poor, seniors, students, and people with disabilities.
“As a Democratic candidate for the office of governor of Alabama, I cannot remain silent as Tuberville tries to lead our state and nation back to a time when Alabama and America were less free. As Alabama’s next governor, I promise to protect every Alabamian’s right to vote – regardless of their politics or beliefs. That’s the kind of governor Alabamians deserve.”
