Huntsville attorney Michael Tewalt has officially qualified with the Alabama Republican Party to seek election as Madison County District Court Judge, Place 1. Tewalt brings more than two decades of experience in state, federal, and military courts.

“I am the only candidate in this race with the courtroom experience necessary to serve. The District Court impacts families, public safety, and the community every day. I am committed to fair, efficient justice grounded in the law and respect for every person who enters the courtroom,” Tewalt said in his announcement.

Tewalt is the founder and owner of The Tewalt Law Firm, LLC. He also serves as a Madison County Circuit Court Referee Judge, where he presides over matters within Alabama’s Child Support Enforcement Program. In that role, he conducts hearings, rules on motions, and works closely with the Alabama Department of Human Resources on both interstate and intrastate enforcement cases.

In addition to his civilian legal work, Tewalt serves as a Lieutenant Colonel and Staff Judge Advocate with the Alabama Air National Guard’s 187th Fighter Wing. His military service has earned numerous awards and commendations.

Tewalt’s prior experience includes service as a Senior Assistant Federal Public Defender for the Northern District of Alabama and as a law clerk to U.S. District Judge Terry F. Moorer in the Middle District of Alabama. He has also served as an Assistant Staff Judge Advocate and Area Defense Counsel in the U.S. Air Force Judge Advocate General Corps.

He earned his Juris Doctor from Cumberland School of Law at Samford University, graduating in the top 15 percent of his class, and holds a Master of Business Administration from Samford University. Tewalt is bilingual in Spanish, an Eagle Scout, and a member of the Alabama and Georgia Bar Associations.

Tewalt will face Tim Douthit in the Republican primary on May 19.
