Our Constitution exists for two reasons: to empower government and—more importantly—to limit it. That’s how freedom is protected. Power rests with the people, not political insiders. That makes our Constitution sacred, not something to be bent for convenience.

That’s why amending it is intentionally hard.

To change Alabama’s Constitution, an amendment must:
• Be approved by both houses of the Legislature
• Pass by a 60% supermajority
• Then be approved by We the People at the ballot box
—or come through a constitutional convention authorized by both houses

Nowhere does our Constitution say a small group of unelected party officials can rewrite it.

Yet that’s exactly what the ALGOP just did.

By their decision, the ALGOP effectively said the 7-year continuous residency requirement doesn’t matter anymore. According to them, you don’t have to live in Alabama—just own property here. That’s a constitutional change the Legislature could never pass and the people of Alabama would never approve.

The arrogance of that move is staggering.

The ALGOP does not have the authority to alter the Constitution. They cannot usurp the power of the Legislature, and they certainly cannot steal the power reserved exclusively to the people of Alabama.

Our legislators should be outraged. Their constitutional authority is being overridden by unelected party officials. They must pressure the ALGOP to reconsider—because the consequences of this decision are massive and dangerous.

Only We the People can change the Alabama Constitution.
And I don’t believe the people would ever vote for this.

The ALGOP must reverse this decision—and they need to do it fast.

Editor’s note: Ken McFeeters is a qualified candidate in the May 19 GOP gubernatorial primary. He recently challenged Sen. Tommy Tuberville’s eligibility to run for Governor. That challenge was rejected by ALGOP.
