“These are the GOP's races to lose”

A veteran Alabama political columnist just published something that stopped us in our tracks.

He said his thinking has changed, all from what he's actually watching happen on the ground. His words: this has gone from "Republicans are going to win" to "these are the GOP's races to lose."

A skeptical, nonpartisan observer — the kind of person whose entire job is not to get swept up in campaign hype — is now saying the Alabama GOP is now on their backfoot, nearing defeat.

We could tell you we're building momentum. We could tell you Doug Jones is running the campaign of his life. We could tell you this party is more organized and united than it's been in years. But you'd expect us to say that. We're Alabama Democrats — of course we think we're winning.

This is different. This is the political press finally catching up to what we've felt on the ground for months.

Doug Jones packed a veterans' town hall in Anniston last week — more than 300 people on a weeknight, in a county Trump carried by 72 points. On a Tuesday. In one of the reddest counties in the entire state. 

That's people showing up because they're done with Tommy Tuberville and his MAGA machine, and they finally have somewhere to put that energy.

Alabama Republicans have gotten used to coasting. Two-thirds of Alabama's ballots are cast straight-ticket, and two-thirds of those go red — that's the built-in advantage they've leaned on for decades instead of actually earning votes. But an advantage only works if people show up to cash it in. And right now, we are out-organizing, out-hustling, and out-energizing a party that forgot how to fight for anything beyond their own comfort.

This is what unprecedented momentum looks like. Not us saying it. The state's own political press saying it.

They're nervous. The numbers are telling on them. And we intend to make sure every dollar and every door between now and November proves them right to be.
