This Thanksgiving, Let’s Celebrate and Support Alabama’s Farmers
Farmers rarely ask for thanks. They don’t seek recognition. But they deserve it
Guest Opinion By Christina Woerner McInnis - Farmer, CEO, and Candidate for Alabama Commissioner of Agriculture and Industries Thanksgiving is a time for family, faith, and gratitude. It’s a reminder to slow down, gather around the table, and give thanks for the blessings God has given us. And at the heart of every Thanksgiving table, whether it’s turkey, sweet potatoes, peas, dressing, or a homemade pie, are the hardworking farmers who make it all possible.
In Alabama, agriculture isn’t just an industry. It’s a way of life. It’s the backbone of our communities, our local economy, and our heritage. From the Wiregrass to the Tennessee Valley, Alabama farmers work long before sunrise and long after sunset to ensure we have the safest, freshest, and highest-quality food in the world. Their labor doesn’t pause for holidays, weekends, or weather. They show up every day because feeding families is a calling as much as a career.
This Thanksgiving, I want to encourage every Alabama family to consider buying local when preparing your holiday meal. Choosing Alabama-grown produce, Alabama-raised poultry and livestock, and items made right here at home keeps our dollars in our communities. It supports family farms, strengthens small businesses, and ensures our state remains a leader in agriculture for generations to come.
Buying local is about more than economics—it’s about connection. When you pick up sweet potatoes grown in Cullman County, or pecans harvested in Baldwin County, or greens from a farm just down the road, you’re supporting a family you may never meet but who works hard to nourish yours. You’re investing in your neighbors, your community, and the future of Alabama agriculture.
Farmers rarely ask for thanks. They don’t seek recognition. But they deserve it—especially now. Rising costs, unpredictable markets, labor shortages, and burdensome federal policies make farming harder every year. Yet our farmers remain resilient. They keep producing. They keep serving. They keep feeding Alabama and America.
So this Thanksgiving, while you’re gathered around the table, I hope you’ll pause for a moment and say a prayer of gratitude for the men and women who grow our food, raise our livestock, and sustain our state. And if you know a farmer personally, tell them “thank you.” It means more than you know.
As we look ahead, my commitment is simple: to support Alabama’s farmers, strengthen our agriculture economy, and help ensure Alabama-grown food always has a place at our tables.
From my family to yours—Happy Thanksgiving, and may God continue to bless our great state and the farmers who feed it.
