SHELBY COUNTY, Ala. — Shelby County Property Tax Commissioner Jacob Tidmore is seeking a full term in office in the May 19 Republican Primary, running on a platform focused on transparency, efficiency, and taxpayer service.

Tidmore, who was appointed to the position by Governor Kay Ivey in March 2025 following the passing of longtime Property Tax Commissioner Don Armstrong, brings nearly a decade of experience inside the office. He began his career as a Real Property Appraiser and worked his way through multiple roles before serving as Property Tax Administrator, gaining hands-on experience across the office's major functions, including appraisal, assessment, collections, budgeting, and compliance.

Today, Tidmore oversees an office responsible for more than 100,000 parcels and for the collection and distribution of over $260 million annually, which support our schools, municipalities, public safety, infrastructure, and other local services across Shelby County.

Supporters say Tidmore’s experience inside the office uniquely prepares him to lead an operation that requires technical knowledge of state law, strong management skills, and attention to detail.

“This isn’t a political job, it’s a professional job,” Tidmore said. “You have to understand the law, understand the system, and manage an office that taxpayers depend on every day.”

One of Tidmore’s top priorities has been increasing transparency for taxpayers. Under his leadership, the office launched a public transparency portal that allows residents to see exactly how property tax dollars are distributed throughout the county.

The portal, available at https://ptc.shelbyal.com/transparency, provides a clear breakdown of how tax revenues are allocated, including funding for schools, municipalities, county government, and other public services.

“For many taxpayers, the property tax bill is the only tax they see locally,” Tidmore said. “We believe taxpayers deserve to know exactly where their money goes. Transparency builds trust.”

Tidmore also says his office is committed to ensuring taxpayers receive every exemption and allowance they qualify for under Alabama law. “Our goal is to help every Shelby County citizen receive every discount and exemption they’re eligible for,” Tidmore said.

“If the law allows it, we want taxpayers to receive it.”That includes working directly with property owners who may want to challenge their valuation through the Board of Equalization (BOE) appeal process. Tidmore says his office works to make the process straightforward and accessible. “Property owners have the right to appeal if they believe their property valuation is incorrect,” Tidmore said. “Our responsibility is to make that process clear, fair, and as smooth as possible.”

Tidmore currently supervises nearly 30 employees and coordinates with state and local agencies, including the Alabama Department of Revenue, to ensure Shelby County’s property tax system operates within state law. He holds the Alabama Certified Appraiser (ACA) designation and has completed more than 200 hours of specialized property tax coursework through Auburn University’s Government and Economic Development program.

A lifelong Shelby County resident, Tidmore graduated as Salutatorian from Shelby County High School before earning a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of South Alabama (Cum Laude).

For Tidmore, the position is about stewardship and service. “This office plays a key role in supporting the services our communities rely on every day, such as schools, public safety, and infrastructure,” Tidmore said. “My focus is making sure the system works fairly, efficiently, and transparently for Shelby County taxpayers.”
