BIRMINGHAM, AL — Former State House Representative and Vice Chair of the Alabama Democratic Party Patricia Todd, Birmingham civic leader and advocate Josh Coleman, and Birmingham Board of Education member Antwon Womack have announced their endorsement of Dakarai Larriett.
Elected in November 2006 as a member of the Alabama House of Representatives representing District 54 in downtown Birmingham, Patricia Todd is the first-ever LGBTQ individual elected to public office in Alabama. Her influence reaches beyond the House of Representatives. She was also the first LGBTQ+ Vice Chair in state party history, served as the Alabama Director of the Human Rights Campaign, and was formerly the Associate Director of AIDS Alabama. Todd knows the importance of leaders who consider all of their constituents while in office.
“We don’t need leaders who pick and choose when to stand up for people. Democrats deserve a candidate who will show up in every room and fight for everyone,” said Todd. “That’s why I’m proud to support Dakarai Larriett.”
Josh Coleman, Birmingham leader and advocate among the Democratic Party and the LGBTQ community, is also concerned with supporting communities that often go unheard.
“I support electing a strong fighter for marginalized communities, and we need a fighter like Dakarai Larriett in the US Senate,” said Coleman.
Celebrated for his dynamic roles as Mayor Woodfin's LGBTQ+ Liaison, Director of Public Affairs for the City of Birmingham, Member of the Democratic National Committee, and Co-Founder of Blueprint Alabama, Coleman has tirelessly championed LGBTQ+ equality and social reform, making him an influential figure shaping Alabama's political and social fabric.

Rounding out the first set of endorsements, Antwon Womack is championing Larriett as well. Womack serves on the Birmingham Board of Education. A paralegal, his commitment to service started with the Ensley Neighborhood Association, where he is the President. He’s supporting Larriett because of his transparency and commitment to service.
“You can feel Dakarai's authenticity. Alabama is demographically changing and becoming more diverse, and I want a U.S. Senator who represents that diversity,” said Womack. “Dakarai embodies what Alabama is becoming and has experienced and lived the challenges of so many Alabamians.”
Like Womack, Larriett’s commitment to education is steadfast. He knows strong schools are the foundation of a stronger Alabama, and every child, no matter where they are, deserves access to the kind of education that prepares them to become employable, responsible members of our communities. Larriett supports ensuring teachers receive fair wages, expanding our technical and job training programs, and ensuring parents have a voice in their children’s education. In his campaign, Larriett often speaks about the need for education to lead to better opportunities for Alabama students.
Dakarai’s passion for public service was ignited during his junior year as an exchange student at Howard University, a historically Black college and university (HBCU) in Washington, DC. At the same time, his internship at US Airways (where he worked in cargo e-commerce and supply chain management with the United States Postal Service) helped forge the professional path he’s followed ever since — first as a corporate leader, and now as a business owner and candidate for the open U.S. Senate seat in Alabama, created by Tommy Tuberville’s gubernatorial campaign.
“I’m so grateful to these influential and inspiring people for their support in this campaign. It will be the honor of my lifetime to serve in the Senate for the great state of Alabama, and it means so much to me knowing that I have their full support,” said Larriett.
The primary election will be held on Tuesday, May 19, 2026. Voters can find polling locations, hours, and registration information at AlabamaVotes.gov.
