Former Alabama Republican Party Chair and candidate for Lieutenant Governor John Wahl responded to attacks from runoff opponent Wes Allen by stating that Allen is a Never Trumper who refused to endorse the President during his 2024 campaign.

In a press release from the Allen campaign which was published verbatim by ALPolitics.com, the campaign stated that Wahl “refused to vote for Donald Trump, Coach Tuberville or any of the Republicans on the primary ballot in 2020.”

ALPolitics.com reached out to Mr. Wahl for a comment on this report, and Wahl responded, saying:

“Wes Allen’s campaign is grasping at straws. It is ridiculous to say that I didn’t support President Trump because I missed one election due to circumstances outside of my control.

“There’s a reason President Trump endorsed me, and Wes Allen knows it. I’m the candidate who has stood with Trump, and I fought for him even when establishment Republicans were attacking him. On the other hand, Wes Allen was the Never Trumper who refused to endorse President Trump and spent the entire election cycle putting roadblocks in the way of the Trump campaign.

“This was a well-known fact within the Trump campaign that was documented before I got into the race. (Source: https://lindelltv.com/will-alabama-elect-a-never-trumper/)

“In August 2023, ahead of President Trump’s visit to Alabama, the Trump campaign contacted leading elected officials seeking endorsements. Wes Allen was the only official who declined to offer his support. Allen’s refusal to endorse President Trump made him the odd man out among Alabama Republicans.

“Allen’s hesitancy to endorse President Trump wasn’t just a fluke. A senior Trump campaign official who desired to remain anonymous remarked regarding Wes Allen:

“‘Wes [Allen] was a “Never Trumper” and very unhelpful. Jocelyn Benson, the Soros-funded Michigan Secretary of State, was more helpful in getting Trump on the ballot in Michigan than Wes was in Alabama. She could have put up a fight if she wanted to. Wes Allen should have been helpful—it was a no-brainer—but he was just a roadblock.’”

“The truth is simple, Wes Allen is attacking me because he doesn’t want to talk about his own failed record when it comes to President Trump.

“We need conservative leaders who will fight for our values and be honest with voters. That’s why I am running, because I’m not a career politician, and I will be the conservative outsider who won’t back down and won’t surrender.”

Allen and Wahl were the two strongest candidates in a crowded field in the Republican primary, together garnering over 78% of all votes cast.

The two will face off in the runoff election on June 16.
