The Alabama Legislature has passed the "What is a Woman Act," which now awaits Governor Kay Ivey's signature. This legislation aims to codify clear definitions of "male" and "female" in state law, basing them on biological sex. Specifically, it defines a female as someone whose reproductive system produces ova and a male as someone whose reproductive system produces sperm.

Senator April Weaver, the bill's sponsor, emphasized the importance of these definitions, stating, "Sex is based on fundamental truths that are as old as the book of Genesis and as reliable as the sun in the sky. Men are born men, and women are born women—one can never become the other."

The bill has garnered support from conservative groups who argue that it provides necessary clarity for state agencies and upholds traditional values. Governor Ivey has expressed strong support for the measure and is expected to sign it into law promptly.
