Why I'm Running for the Alabama House of Representatives

Guest Opinion by Bryan K. Newell, U.S. Army (Ret.)
After a lifetime of service to my country, I am proud to announce my candidacy for the Alabama House of Representatives in District 50.
I am a retired Army combat veteran who served 22 years with multiple tours overseas, including in Iraq and Afghanistan. I've led soldiers through the fog of war, made life-or-death decisions under pressure, and come home with the deep conviction that public service doesn't end when the uniform comes off.
Alabama is worth fighting for. From the rolling hills of North Alabama to the Gulf Coast, our communities are built on hard work, faith, and family. But today, too many of our working families are being left behind. Our schools are underperforming. Our teachers are underpaid. Our rural hospitals are closing. Our veterans are still struggling to access mental health care.
Here are some ideas we can start with:
- Pass a state lottery and let the people decide.
- Bring accountable gaming laws that create thousands of good-paying jobs.
- Reward our best teacher with a real bonus — not just a plaque.
- Promote vocational training.
- Alabama ranked 44 in education. Fix the broken system.
- Attract high-paying industries to St. Clair County and make Central Alabama a destination for innovation.
- Oversite on CPS, fix the broken parts and promote adoption.
- Veteran drug rehab, with vocational training and job placement (Purpose)
That's why I'm stepping forward. I can't fix the problems sitting on my couch griping and complaining about what I see. When I was in the Military I fought for every American, regardless of background or belief. If elected to the Alabama House, I will fight with the same integrity and grit—for our veterans, our teachers, our farmers, our first responders, and our working-class families.
As a born-again Christian and an adopted child, I am pro-life. As a conservative I believe in limited government, fiscal responsibility, strong borders, and protecting our Second Amendment rights. As a Soldier I will never leave a fallen comrade behind. But I also believe in results, not rhetoric. When a veteran can't get the care they need, or when a child goes to a failing school, that's not a red issue or a blue issue—it's a failure of leadership and a failure in representation.
I will bring a soldier's discipline, a father's compassion, and a citizen's urgency to Montgomery. I'm not a career politician. I'm a man of faith, a husband, a father, a Soldier, and a servant to my community And I'm ready to stand up and serve again.
This campaign isn't about me—it's about WE THE PEOPLE. About restoring honor to public office and putting people over politics. I humbly ask for your prayers, your support, and ultimately, your vote.
Because leadership isn't about titles. It's about action.
