Woodfin Address 4000+ Birmingham Muslims at Boutwell Prayer Service
Birmingham Mayor affirmed the City’s welcoming status at end-of-Ramadan ceremony
Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin hosted over 4000 Birmingham area members of the Muslim community at Boutwell Auditorium for the Eid prayer Friday morning, March 20.
Eid ul-Fitr is a major Muslim holiday marking the end of Ramadan, a month of daily fasting, prayer, and charity. The Eid prayer is a special, large congregational prayer held shortly after sunrise — often in public venues like Boutwell Auditorium — to bring the community together in gratitude, reflection, and celebration. As both a religious observance and a civic moment, local leaders like Mayor Woodfin are often invited to speak and recognize the community.
In a post on Facebook following the event, Mayor Woodfin said:
“Assalamu Alaikum (peace and blessings upon you).
“Eid Mubarak (blessed/happy Eid).
“I am Randall Woodfin, and I serve as Mayor of the City of Birmingham.
“I had the honor to be with so many from our Muslim community, and I wanted to reaffirm and share with you the city of Birmingham, not only as a municipal government, but as a community — we welcome and embrace our Muslim community, our Muslim brothers, our Muslim families.
“You show up in this community and you give back. You are professionals in all spaces. You live right here in this city, in this metro area, I want you to feel at home.
“For the second and third generation of Muslim families who are here, just know that, with the rhetoric that exists in our nation and even some of the rhetoric that exists in our state, that is not who your home city and hometown is.
“We believe in you, we embrace you, we support you, we value you and we love you. This is home.”
This is not the first time Mayor Woodfin has shown his support for the local Muslim community. In January, he proclaimed Eid-Ul-Fitr and Eid-Ul-Adha as Muslim Holidays in the City of Birmingham.
