Guest Opinion by Stormin Norman Horton

A few weeks ago I published my simple plan to start reigning in the Public Service Commission.

I learned a long time ago that the powers that be don't like simple, and they don't like to lose control.

That is why the first time our legislature attacked the power bill problem, they tried to take power away from the people by nominating their cronies.  The people spoke and they backed off.

Now they are back again, but once again stacking the deck away from we the people.  Yes we noticed.

The public wants term limits. The people that can make that happen, don't.  My concept of ONE 6 year term was inserted into a new bill sponsored by one of our State Senators and changed to TERMS.

When you borrow part, but not all of a plan, that is just another reason for term limits.

Oh... they also conveniently forgot all about open  hearings.

Instead of a salary mirroring the per capita income of Alabamians, they somehow deserve a merit based pay system.  What the merit is based on was left unsaid.

Our Public Service Commissioners were brought to heel by the power companies, the reverse of what should have happened. We the people have paid the price of greed gone rogue.

When I did my research, I found some commissioners who “worked” from home with 3 assistants, a state car for their monthly jaunt to the office to vote for the energy companies suggestions as relayed through their lawyer/executive assistant  behind closed doors.  All for the low, low cost to taxpayers of a $100,000 salary. This mess is best explained by my strawberries. They were moldy...so I  introduced a nice fresh strawberry to the mix, put it on top, front and center.  That didn't fix nary a one of the moldy berries, in fact the moldy ones went right to work corrupting the new berry.

Yes, the bottom line principle is not the process — it's the people.

Throwing a part of a good plan on top of a corrupt system works about as good as my attempt to salvage my strawberries.

Term limits, you really should try it.
