Young Boozer Runs Again!
Will be seeking 4th term as Alabama’s State Treasurer

Alabama State Treasurer Young Boozer announced Wednesday that he will be seeking re-election to his fourth term in 2026.
Boozer, a Republican, previously served as State Treasurer from 2011 to 2019 and was reappointed in 2021 by Governor Kay Ivey, following the resignation of his successor, John McMillan. He was elected to a full term in 2022 with 83.7% of the vote against Libertarian Scott Hammond. No Democrat ran for State Treasurer in that race.
“I am pleased to announce my candidacy for State Treasurer for the 2026 election,” Boozer stated. “I would be proud to once again serve the 5 million citizens of Alabama with my unique skills and vast experience, to continue to improve all divisions of the office and to serve as a financial resource to other areas of state government.”
During his tenure, Boozer has overseen significant financial initiatives. He successfully negotiated a settlement for the Prepaid Affordable College Tuition (PACT) program, stabilizing the plan and ensuring continued benefits for participants. Additionally, he launched a scholarship program that has awarded approximately $12.8 million to over 3,600 Alabama high school students.
Under Boozer's leadership, the State Treasury became self-funded, eliminating its reliance on the state's General Fund. He also expanded programs such as the $2.7 billion CollegeCounts 529 plan and the Alabama ABLE Savings Plan, which allows individuals with disabilities to save money without jeopardizing their eligibility for public benefits.
Boozer emphasized fiscal responsibility during his previous terms, reducing office staff from 46 to 26 and cutting the office's budget below 2011 levels. “During my time as Treasurer, I have managed billions, earned billions, and saved millions of dollars for Alabama taxpayers,” he said.
He also worked with lawmakers to improve the Alabama Trust Fund, which holds $4.7 billion in assets from oil and gas royalties, aiming to provide a more stable revenue source and ensure prudent long-term management.
Born in Birmingham on November 23, 1948 and raised in Tuscaloosa, Boozer holds a Bachelor's degree in economics from Stanford University and a Master's degree in finance from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. His career in banking and finance includes positions at Citibank, Crocker National Bank, Coral Petroleum, and Colonial Bank.
Beyond his professional roles, Boozer has been active in civic life, contributing to organizations such as the Church of the Ascension in Montgomery, the Montgomery Rotary Club, the Alabama Shakespeare Festival, the Boy Scouts of America, the National Association of State Treasurers, and Stanford University's Board of Trustees.
The Republican primary for State Treasurer will be held May 19, 2026. As of yet, no other candidates have declared in the State Treasurer race.
