The Heart of Dixie podcast recently brought together a mix of State and local political voices, touching on regulatory concerns, ethics questions, and ongoing disputes in Baldwin County.

Hosted by Harry Still and Brandon Mosley, the episode opened with a spotlight on the Alabama Public Service Commission (PSC) race. Candidate Jim Zeigler joined the program to outline his campaign for PSC Place 2, positioning himself as an opponent of entrenched political influence. Zeigler emphasized the need for transparency in utility regulation, particularly when it comes to rate-setting decisions.

He argued that the current system limits meaningful oversight, stating his campaign is focused on ensuring “fair utility rate hearings” and pushing back against what he views as undue influence from major power providers. The discussion also touched on the broader relationship between regulators, lawmakers, and utility companies in Alabama.

The episode then shifted to the ongoing controversy surrounding the Mabel Amos Memorial Fund. Paul Ripp of The Ripp Report provided an update, raising concerns about the management of scholarship funds tied to the trust. He alleged that former Alabama Ethics Commission director Tom Albritton engaged in self-dealing related to the fund, an accusation that adds to growing scrutiny over how the trust has been administered.

Local issues in Baldwin County also featured prominently. The hosts discussed concerns about transparency and governance involving the North Baldwin Utilities board and the City of Bay Minette. These conversations included references to legal disputes and ongoing tensions between public officials and residents.

Kevin Brock, candidate Baldwin County Commission, District 3, joined the discussion to share his experiences on the campaign trail. His remarks focused on the challenges of running as an outsider and navigating a difficult political environment.

In addition to policy and governance topics, the episode included a segment of original music by Brock titled “The Machine Don’t Bleed.”
