Alabama GOP Chairman John Wahl Urges Montgomery Leaders to Call President Trump for Help Fighting Crime

From the Alabama Republican Party

Montgomery, AL – Alabama Republican Party Chairman John Wahl issued the following statement after the tragic shooting in Montgomery over the weekend, urging city leaders to partner with President Trump and take advantage of his national crime initiative to restore safety, order, and hope to local communities.

“Our hearts go out to the victims, their families, and the entire Montgomery community. No family should ever have to experience this kind of heartbreak. As we grieve with those who are suffering, we must also come together to find real solutions to end the violence plaguing our streets. It’s time for leaders at every level to come together and take decisive action to make our streets safe again."

Wahl said the tragedy underscores the urgent need for Montgomery leaders to embrace President Trump’s executive order, ‘Ending Crime and Disorder on America’s Streets’, and work with federal partners to bring the President’s plan to life in Alabama.

“Montgomery leaders should be calling President Trump for help right now,” Wahl said. “This is not a time for division or politics—it’s a time for partnership and protecting our neighborhoods. President Trump has made crime prevention a priority of his administration, and his vision offers resources, national leadership, and real help for cities like Montgomery to combat violent crime. I strongly encourage city officials to work with the Trump administration to make our neighborhoods safer and protect our children’s future. The families of Montgomery deserve to know that every possible step is being taken to keep them safe.”

In recent weeks, Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed expressed opposition to proposals by Senator Tommy Tuberville and others to utilize federal or state assistance in addressing crime. Wahl urged the mayor and city leaders to reconsider that stance in light of recent events.

“This week’s violence in Montgomery cannot be ignored or explained away,” Wahl said. “Denying the severity of our crime problem doesn’t make it disappear—it only makes it worse. The people of Montgomery deserve every possible resource to fight this crisis. President Trump is offering help to cities across the country, and local leaders should take him up on it. This is not about party affiliation—it’s about saving lives. Crime affects people of all backgrounds. Whether you’re Republican or Democrat, rich or poor, black or white, everyone deserves to live in a safe community.”

Wahl also stressed that solving the crime crisis requires more than just policy—it requires a moral and cultural renewal that begins at home, in schools, and throughout our communities.

“This heartbreaking event underscores a crisis that goes far beyond crime statistics: too many young people are growing up without an understanding of the value and sanctity of human life. Violence begins in the heart and mind long before it is acted out. We must teach our young people that life is sacred, that choices have consequences, and that every person is made in the image of God. Combating crime starts with restoring character, responsibility, and faith in our society.”
