ALGOP Chairman John Wahl and AEA Hold Cordial Discussion Affirming Support for Parental Rights and Homeschool Freedom

From the Alabama Republican Party

Montgomery, AL – Alabama Republican Party Chairman John Wahl met with representatives of the Alabama Education Association (AEA) to discuss recent public comments regarding homeschooling and parental rights. Wahl described the meeting as “cordial and productive,” noting that both sides reaffirmed their shared commitment to protecting children and supporting the rights of parents in education.

“I was pleased to hear directly from the AEA that they have no plans to pursue additional reporting or enrollment requirements for homeschool families,” said Wahl. “We had a positive conversation, and I want to thank them for their willingness to talk and their commitment to these values. I appreciated their assurance that there were no plans to support increased regulations or government strings on homeschoolers in Alabama.”

Recent media reports had suggested the possibility of new homeschool regulations, raising concerns among parents and education freedom advocates after State Board of Education and AEA officials discussed the rise in students not returning to public schools this year. Wahl said he felt it was important to talk directly with the AEA to clarify their position on this issue.

“I think it’s important that we work together to serve the people of Alabama,” Wahl said. “There’s common ground in wanting every child in our state to have a safe and high-quality education. I believe the first step in accomplishing that goal is protecting the fundamental right of parents to make educational decisions for their families without unnecessary government interference.”

Chairman Wahl also addressed the growing number of Alabama families choosing alternatives to public schools this year, reaffirming the Alabama Republican Party’s unwavering commitment to parental choice and educational freedom.

“The Alabama Republican Party strongly supports parental rights and the homeschooling community,” Wahl said. “Alabama families don’t need government bureaucrats or the Department of Education to keep their children safe. Parents know what’s best for their families and are fully capable of making those decisions without state intrusion or oversight.”

As a strong advocate for free markets, Wahl encouraged the public school system to focus on improving its services and earning back the trust of Alabama parents instead of trying to increase government regulations on educational alternatives.

“The public school system shouldn’t be worried about parents choosing other educational options—or trying to regulate those who do,” Wahl said. “Instead, they should concentrate on improving the quality of education and academic performance for public school students. Competition in education is healthy, and we should embrace it. It drives excellence and ensures that every child in Alabama has access to the best possible learning environment.”

Wahl reaffirmed that protecting parental authority remains one of the Alabama Republican Party’s highest priorities. “Our Party will always stand with parents and defend their God-given right to raise and educate their children according to their own faith, values, and convictions,” he concluded.
