Angela Harris, the mother of murder victim Aniah Blanchard, has endorsed Pamela Casey in Alabama’s Republican primary race for Attorney General while also urging voters to support Amendment 1 on the May 19 ballot.

Casey, the longtime District Attorney for Blount County, announced the endorsement Tuesday in a campaign release.

Harris has become a public advocate for crime victims and tougher public safety laws since the 2019 kidnapping and killing of her daughter. The case drew Statewide attention and later led to the passage of Aniah's Law, which expanded the list of offenses for which judges may deny bail.

“After walking through every parent’s worst nightmare, I know how important it is to have leaders in law enforcement who truly understand victims and who are willing to fight for them,” Harris said. “Pamela Casey has spent her career standing with victims and putting violent criminals behind bars. She is not a career politician — she is a prosecutor with real courtroom experience, and Alabama needs that experience as Attorney General.”

Harris also spoke in favor of Amendment 1, which would further address pretrial release issues involving violent offenders.

“Too many dangerous offenders are being released back into our communities while awaiting trial,” Harris said. “Amendment 1 is about protecting families and ensuring more violent offenders are not back on the streets while their cases are pending. I encourage Alabamians to vote YES on Amendment 1.”

Under Aniah's Law, which was passed in 2022, Alabama judges already have the authority to deny bail for several violent offenses if prosecutors prove a defendant poses a serious threat to the public or a flight risk. Current non-bailable offenses include murder, first-degree kidnapping, first-degree rape, first-degree sodomy, sexual torture, first-degree domestic violence, first-degree human trafficking, first-degree burglary, first-degree arson, first-degree robbery, terrorism, and aggravated child abuse. Amendment 1 would expand that list to include attempted murder, conspiracy to commit murder, solicitation to commit murder, and shooting into occupied homes, vehicles, or buildings.

Casey said Harris’s support carries deep meaning because of her work on behalf of victims’ families across Alabama.

“No parent should ever endure the pain Angela Harris and her family have faced,” Casey said. “Through unimaginable tragedy, she has become an advocate for victims across Alabama. Her strength and courage have inspired so many people, including me. I am honored to have her endorsement and will continue fighting every day for victims, families, and the safety of our communities.”

Casey also endorsed Amendment 1, arguing the measure would help judges and prosecutors keep violent offenders off the streets while cases move through the court system.

“As a prosecutor, I have seen firsthand the danger posed when violent offenders are released while awaiting trial,” Casey said. “Amendment 1 will help keep dangerous criminals off the streets and make our communities safer. I strongly encourage voters to support it on May 19.”

Casey has served as District Attorney in Blount County for nearly two decades. Her campaign said she has prosecuted violent offenders, child predators, and murder cases during her time in office, including several capital murder trials.

“Victims deserve an Attorney General who has actually stood in a courtroom fighting for them,” Casey added. “That experience matters.”

The Alabama Republican primary election is scheduled for May 19, 2026.
