The Medical Association of the State of Alabama (MASA) announced Thursday that former Alabama Revenue Commissioner Vernon Barnett has been named the organization’s new Executive Director.

Barnett will officially step into the role on May 18, becoming the first new Executive Director for the Association since 2014. He succeeds longtime leader Mark Jackson, who retired last month after serving 12 years in the position.

“The Medical Association represents thousands of physicians across our State, and I’m honored to step into this role,” Barnett said. “Physicians in Alabama are facing real challenges – from burdensome insurance requirements to workforce shortages, reimbursement pressures and a demanding legal environment. The Medical Association will continue to be a strong voice for doctors and a partner in improving access to high-quality care for patients.”

Barnett retired from State government in April after nine years leading the Alabama Department of Revenue under Governor Kay Ivey’s administration. Before serving as revenue commissioner, he held senior legal and leadership roles across several State agencies, including the Alabama Department of Environmental Management, the Alabama Department of Corrections, and the Alabama Attorney General’s Office

Nina Ford Johnson, a Mobile pediatrician who now serves as President of the Association, praised Barnett’s background in public service and state policy.

“Vernon brings a deep understanding of state government and a strong track record of leadership,” Ford Johnson said. “At a time when physicians and patients are facing increasing challenges, his leadership will help strengthen our advocacy and support for doctors across Alabama.”

The Medical Association of the State of Alabama represents more than 7,000 physicians and remains the State’s largest organization for medical professionals. The group focuses on physician advocacy, healthcare policy, and protecting the physician-patient relationship across Alabama.
