American Cardinal Robert Prevost becomes first American Pope in history

Cardinal Robert Prevost has been elected the first American pope in the 2,000-year history of the Catholic Church.
Prevost, 69, took the name Leo XIV.
Prevost, age 69, is an American missionary who spent his career ministering in Peru. Most recently, he has led the Vatican’s powerful Office of Bishops.
Pope Leo XIV emerged from the Vatican to greet the crowd on St. Peter’s Square at 12:24 PM CST.
