Casey Endorses Mitchell in AG Runoff
Blount County DA Pamela Casey backs Jay Mitchell for Attorney General, citing courtroom experience and concerns over dark money
Pamela Casey has endorsed Jay Mitchell in Alabama’s Republican runoff for Attorney General, saying the State needs a candidate with courtroom experience and a clear understanding of the legal system.
Casey, the longtime Blount County District Attorney and a former candidate in the Republican primary, announced her endorsement Tuesday in an open letter to Alabama voters.
“This election is ultimately about who is best prepared to serve the people of Alabama moving forward,” Casey said. “At the end of the day, I believe Alabama deserves an Attorney General who has actual courtroom and legal experience. Jay Mitchell has been in the courtroom. He understands the law, the judicial system, and the serious responsibility that comes with serving as our State’s top law enforcement officer.”
Mitchell served on the Alabama Supreme Court from 2019 until resigning in 2025 to run for Attorney General.
Casey also raised concerns about political spending in Statewide races and the influence of undisclosed groups.
“I am deeply concerned about the role dark money and outside interests played in this race,” Casey said. “Alabamians deserve transparency and accountability from those seeking public office.”

The Attorney General’s race has become one of the most expensive and heated Republican primaries in Alabama this cycle, with millions spent by candidates and outside groups.
In her statement, Casey also addressed IVF-related campaign messaging that surfaced during the primary. Mitchell drew national attention while serving on the Alabama Supreme Court after authoring the court’s opinion that ruled frozen embryos could be considered children under Alabama’s Wrongful Death of a Minor Act. The decision briefly disrupted IVF services across the State in 2024.
“Like thousands of Alabama families, my family faced the difficult reality of infertility, and IVF was not a political talking point for us,” Casey said. “It was personal. It was emotional. It was part of our journey to build our family. Alabama families who have experienced infertility deserve compassion and understanding, not political exploitation.”
Casey said she also confronted Mitchell directly over campaign ads she considered inappropriate during the primary contest.
“Let me say this plainly: I found two of the commercials run by Jay’s campaign in the primary to be distasteful and unbecoming,” Casey wrote. “I spoke directly with Jay about those ads. He assured me that his focus moving forward will be on the extensive legal and courtroom experience that qualifies him to serve as Attorney General.”
Throughout her campaign, Casey often pointed to her nearly two decades as a prosecutor. She previously earned endorsements from dozens of law enforcement officials and prosecutors across Alabama.
“I entered this race because I believed experience, integrity, and service mattered more than political insiders or massive outside spending,” Casey said. “I still believe that today.”
Casey closed her endorsement by encouraging her supporters to unite behind Mitchell in the runoff election.
“For those reasons, I am proud to support Jay Mitchell for Attorney General, and I respectfully ask those who supported me to join me in supporting him in the runoff,” Casey said.
