Republican Ian Chwatuk is making the case that Alabama House District 70 is ready for a new direction, launching his general election campaign on a platform centered on economic growth, education and infrastructure.

Chwatuk, who won the Republican nomination without opposition, will face longtime incumbent Rep. Christopher England (D-Tuscaloosa) in the Nov. 3 general election. House District 70 has long been represented by Democrats and remains one of the State's more heavily Democratic legislative districts.

According to his campaign, Chwatuk is seeking to "deliver common sense leadership, protect our communities, strengthen schools, and keep government accountable to the people it serves."

Chwatuk points to his personal story as evidence of the opportunities Alabama can provide.

"I'm running to flip District 70 because I believe our community deserves fresh ideas, strong leadership, and a continued focus on economic growth and educational opportunity," Chwatuk said.

He added, "I grew up in a lower middle-class household and was the first person in my family to graduate from college. Alabama gave me the opportunity to build a career and achieve the American Dream, and I want to ensure future generations have the same opportunities."

"Today, I serve my community as a Realtor, Attorney, and Adjunct Assistant Professor at The University of Alabama. These experiences have given me a unique perspective on the challenges facing Alabama families, businesses, and students," Chwatuk said.

His platform emphasizes maintaining Alabama's recent economic momentum while making targeted investments in local infrastructure.

"My campaign is centered on economic development and education. Alabama has seen record investment and job creation in recent years, and I want to ensure District 70 is part of that continued success. I also believe we must continue investing in infrastructure that supports growth and improves quality of life. That means addressing long-overdue needs, such as repairing aging bridges along Veterans Memorial Parkway, while also working with community leaders to reimagine University Mall into a vibrant destination that attracts businesses, families, and visitors. Strong infrastructure creates stronger communities and helps position District 70 for future investment."

Another key part of Chwatuk's platform is support for a State lottery dedicated to education funding.

"I also proudly support establishing a State lottery to help fund education, a proposal supported by a strong majority of Alabamians. I believe additional education funding can help improve opportunities for students and strengthen Alabama's future workforce."

He said creating opportunity remains the central goal of his campaign.

"I believe everyone should have the opportunity to achieve the American Dream, but opportunity doesn't happen by accident. We must continue creating jobs, investing in education, and providing the tools and resources people need to succeed. I am running to bring fresh ideas, practical solutions, and a new generation of leadership to Montgomery while fighting for the families and businesses of District 70."

District 70 covers much of central and western Tuscaloosa and has been represented by England since 2006. Republicans have not held the seat in nearly two decades, making the race one of the GOP's more challenging legislative targets in the 2026 election cycle.
