Birmingham, AL – Doug Jones, Democratic nominee for governor, released the following statement regarding the Supreme Court's decision to uphold birthright citizenship in Trump v. Barbara, a 6-3 decision:
"Since the 14th Amendment was ratified shortly after the abolition of slavery, the Constitution has guaranteed that children born on American soil are American citizens. Today, the Supreme Court, in a decision by Chief Justice John Roberts, rightfully held that President Trump’s executive order stripping away birthright citizenship is unconstitutional.
While Justice Kavanaugh joined the majority in blocking Trump’s executive order, he based his reasoning on federal statute rather than the Constitution. Trump is now pressuring Congress to jockey around with the plain meaning of the 14th Amendment and pass unconstitutional legislation ending birthright citizenship. I will fight those efforts. Our Constitution, not politicians trying to consolidate power, must decide who is a citizen.
As we celebrate America’s 250th birthday this weekend, I hope we will all reflect on who we are as a nation. For 250 years, immigrants have come to America for freedom and the American dream. We are a nation made up of people from many races and national origins. It’s who we are. And it’s who we should continue to be."
